There is no single correct way to answer this question. I recommend using the type of guitar that is used in the style that you want to play the most. Acoustic and Electric guitars are played exactly the same way.

Once you know the guitars that are used by your favorite styles, try to find a cheaper version of the guitar for your first guitar.

For example, many blues and rock musicians play a Fender Stratocaster.  There is a Fender Squier Stratocaster that is significantly cheaper and also gives a similar sound and feel.  Many Gibson guitars have cheaper versions that are made by Epiphone, which is owned by the Gibson company.
